After the scintillating auction of the first production Thar that saw the hammer fall at Rs 1.1 crore, Mahindra has officially launched the new Thar at Rs 9.80 lakh(ex-showroom, India). One of the most awaited launches of the year, the new Thar is available in two trims and two engine and gearbox options. The AX trim priced between Rs 9.80 – 12.20 lakh(ex-showroom, India) and the LX trim priced between Rs 12.49-13.75 lakh(ex-showroom, India).
Starting with the AX trim which is the more basic of the two, you get the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine, both of which are mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. In terms of features, the AX is quite basic and is more inclined to the serious off-roaders who wouldn’t mind skipping over some convenience features. There is plenty available on the AX (OPT) though. You get two plus four seating layout, but the more comfortable front-facing seats are optional extras. Then you have the hard-top along with a roll-cage. What you do miss out on is the 6-speed automatic gearbox that is available only on the LX trim. Other additions include a mechanical differential, power windows, power steering, dual airbags with ABS and EBD and reverse parking sensors as well.
The better equipped LX trim is priced between Rs 12.49 lakh and Rs 12.95 lakh. On it, is the biggest addition is the 6-speed automatic gearbox for the petrol and diesel engines. Then there is the extensive features list which includes a brake locking differential, ESP with roll-over mitigation, tyre pressure monitor, bigger 18-inch alloys, LED DRLS with fog lamps, cruise control, and a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
There is a lot more in here, and overall it is evident that the LX is the more practical of the two variants. In contrast, the AX is for someone interested in purely off-roading and using it as a lifestyle vehicle occasionally.
