The all-new 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA is finally launched with prices starting at Rs 42.10 lakh. The baby SUV from Merc has been doing the rounds of the internet for quite a while, and has garnered plenty of interest. Also, unlike most manufacturers that are shying away from diesel engines, Mercedes-Benz has powered on with the two diesel variants on offer, and one of them is the all-wheel-drive 4MATIC version.

The entry to the GLA range starts from the GLA 200 (Rs 42.10 lakh), featuring a 1.3-litre petrol engine; the same as the one seen on the recently launched Mercedes-Benz A-Class. It churns out 161bhp and is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The two diesel variants on offer have the same engine and are only differentiated by the all-wheel-drive system. The standard 220d (Rs 43.70 lakh) gets a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine with 187bhp and 400Nm. Mated to it is an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.
On the 220d 4MATIC (Rs 46.70 lakh) you get the same kit as the 220d but with the 4MATIC system for those once-in-a-while B-road adventures.

The pleasant surprise though was the launch of the AMG 35 4MATIC (Rs 57.30 lakh). The hot new SUV is the third AMG to be made in India, which is the big reason for its aggressive pricing.
You get a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, again, as you have on the A35, and makes 302bhp with 400Nm.
The new GLA is a complete departure from its predecessor and has now grown in dimensions as well. It boasts a segment-best wheelbase of 2729mm along with a host of tech and features.

Speaking about the launch, Martin Schwenk, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said, “The new GLA which has grown to be more aggressive, bold-looking and tech-laden than ever before, has been a much-awaited product for customers. The SUV now also comes as a locally manufactured AMG with the AMG GLA 35 4M, our third AMG model. In addition, the industry best 8-year extended warranty on engine and transmission makes the GLA and AMG GLA 35 4M compelling products, driving complete peace of mind. We are offering these products for our discerning customers across markets where economic activities continue. Interested customers can visit the showroom following all the mandated local directives in their markets, or can also order the GLA from our online store through a completely safe and secure contactless sales process. We sincerely hope the pandemic situation alleviates and normalcy resumes in our lives and society at large.”

The GLA will be on sale throughout India as situations improve and you can also order the GLA through Mercedes’ online and contactless sales processes. In terms of direct rivals, the new GLA locks its horns against the BMW X1, the Audi Q2 (until the Q3 arrives), the Volvo XC40, and even the Mini Countryman. The GLA 35 though, is kind of in a league of its own at the moment.
