France, also known to be the fashion capital of the world, has been influencing us all a lot into fashion and glamor. Be it the grandeur of castles and chateaux to the patisseries serving gourmet dishes, Cheeses, Baguettes, Pastries & Macarons. One cannot miss the beautiful French Riviera, lavender fields, Mont Blanc and of course the famous Eiffel Tower. Though, the French are also known to make some distinctively gorgeous looking cars as well.

Now you might be wondering that I’m (or at least I’d like to day-dream that way) sitting in a french cafe sipping on some bloody wine and devouring myself with some delicious croissants while bragging about the French Revolution. But, on the contrary, I recently got to drive the all new refreshed Citroen C5 Aircross (here in the land of chai and samosas), sprinkled with some extra powdered sugar. With that said, let’s find out the recipe and if this will suffice with the taste buds of the sweet toothed Indian consumers?

It’s cheesy and tasty !

The new C5 Aircross is visually larger and imposing. It introduces a new design language in which curves have made way for more structural lines. It makes it look less bulbous than before with added character lines to make it look sharper. The styling up front has had a prominent facelift which now becomes more vertical and modern, reinforcing the character of a safe and imposing vehicle with dominating looks. The taut lines and vertical stepped construction contribute to visual widening the front end of C5 Aircross.

Adorned with a new interpretation of the Brand logo, the chevrons now appear in black lacquer set off in chrome. Visually extended are the chrome and black piano keys like grille that gradually blend into LED DRLs. Very subtle, refined and detailed work has been done in this section to enhance the overall impression.

Characteristic of the new Citroën design ideology, the V-shaped LED DRLs signature is made of a piano keys design which gives a hi-tech and deeper-looking 3D effect in the front lights. Furthermore, the LED Vision projector is more discrete and darker, prolonging visually the black grille and further accentuating the robustness of the vehicle.

Beneath the piano like grille, a revamped bumper with redesigned air intake area visually widens the front end of Citroën C5 Aircross and gives it a more imposing and dominating stance on the road. The air curtains, which mind it aren’t fake, and are open and functional, appear to be sculpted by the air and help to improve the aerodynamics. The brushed silver color of the inserts adorning the air curtains contributes to the vehicle’s move upmarket.

The skid plate in the lower area of the front bumper makes the front end even more dynamic and gives it a much high-quality and prestigious appearance.

A visual treat with a distinctive yet dynamic profile !

The Citroën C5 Aircross features a distinctive crossover like posture, expressed through its full and generous modeling, its high and horizontal bonnet, as well as a 360° glazed line drawing a chrome C side signature and reinforcing the floating effect of the roof. The attributes of a powerful and reassuring SUV also appear in its muscular side panels: ground clearance of 230 mm, large 720 mm-diameter wheels, distinctive roof rails and a dominating driving position.

Several styling elements on the side panels also helps in enhancing its elegance and modernity, like the new 18″ diamond-cut PULSAR alloy wheels with the new Glossy Black color of the rear-view mirror shells which enhances the elegance and perceived quality; the glossy black functional roof rails also add a flair to the up-right stance of the C5. 

Look at it from the rear and you will notice that the design is completely consistent with the front of the vehicle. It all blends in cohesively and has a new three-dimensional LED light signature at the rear. Without a change in size, the lamp unit is now fitted with dark and structured glass, highlighting the three LED lighting modules that constitute the light signature. The graphical  elements help in accentuating the elegance and consistency with the front light signature. 

Citroën C5 Aircross adopts a new Eclipse Blue body color, a very deep and elegant blue which changes from dark blue to black depending on the external light.

The passenger compartment has evolved and is redefined with visual aesthetics making it a pleasant place to be seated in.

Adherenting to the move of making the exterior more upmarket, the interior of the new Citroën C5 Aircross has been given a more dynamic makeover, with improvements to space and comfort that are obvious as soon as you step inside. The perceived quality of the materials, the ergonomics and practicality of the interfaces have been enhanced to lend it a modern and distinguished SUV profile.

Step inside and the most prominent changes which catch your eye is the overall dashboard layout. The central console sits high and large, and has been modernized with a new, elegant and hi-tech e-Toggle gear selector, and a new driving mode selection button. The central console also integrates a large storage trail regrouping the connectivity with 2 USB-ports and a wireless charger. Again to point out, enormous storage spaces at different places inside the vehicle really makes it practical.

The new C5 Aircross gets a new 10″ touchscreen that appears to be floating on the dashboard and immerses the experience in a much more modern way. This new, larger screen improves ergonomics by offering direct-access climate controls and a higher reading that allows you to keep your eyes on the road. Though, in my opinion, Aircon controls should have stayed the old fashion way and an inclusion of manual scroller to toggle through different Aircon speeds could have been a better way.

In addition, the fully customisable 12″3 instrument cluster provides all vital and customisable information directly in the driver’s eye-line: navigation map report, information on active driver-assistance systems, etc. – ensuring that the driver’s eyes stay on the road for completely safe driving.

Furthermore, the colors and materials chosen for the interior trims have been refined, with a choice of premium fabric materials to highlight comfort. Different dark and light shades of gray adorn the exquisite feel and accentuates the overall appeal. 

C5 Aircross is equipped with the new generation of Citroën Advanced Comfort which are by far the most comfortable on any SUV of this segment. Made of high-density foam in the core of the seat, an extra 15 mm layer of foam and a specific construction, Citroën Advanced Comfort seats offer the best in terms of visual, seating and driving comfort, and for the long term thanks to a special type of foam that resists sagging over time.

New Blue stitching decorates the seats, door panels and dashboard in a very coherent and elegant way.

It is the only SUV in the segment to offer three individual sliding, reclining and retractable rear seats, allowing you to enjoy people carrier-level modularity in a real SUV. It also helps in liberating a ginormous boot space. 

Finally, a lot has gone into tweaking the acoustic characters to reduce the NVH levels. The acoustic laminated front windows amplify the cocoon effect within the car.

Unarguably the best on-board comfort 

Having driven it for around 200 kms at a stretch, the C5 Aircross unquestionably took over my childhood appreciative senses. As the distinguished comfort factor of Citroën’s DNA started sulking in me with all its glory, the new C5 Aircross made complete sense in and out. It retains the major characteristics from the previous generation that make it stand out in its segment, contributing to an overall experience.

Let alone be the Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspensions, which are phenomenal & exclusive to Citroën. It enhances the absorption of any undulations on the road and ensures that passengers travel in absolute comfort, that too with a real “flying carpet” effect.

Power you ask? Well it resides in all your will. Its 2 liter 4 cylinder powerhouse packs in 175 horses which could throw you back at the seat with a whopping 400 Nm of torque which kicks in the instant you flick down the gear. Even more enjoyable driving in the sports mode while engaging in the game-like slick paddle shifters. All this is coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission which provides linear acceleration and sporty performance all throughout the red line, while not being over dramatic in bumper to bumper city traffic conditions. It is like taming the most thoroughbred stable stallion. Poised and civilized when needed, yet nasty when you want it. 

Ice-breaker ! (Verdict)

In order to better meet the expectations of customers in the C-SUV segment, the new Citroën C5 Aircross relies on elegant customisations to significantly improve the vehicle’s move upmarket. With a huge step towards pertaining to the current demography’s whims and fancies, the C5 Aircross has crossed leaps and bounds with the choicest of upgrades both inside out. With the current SUV obsessed automotive scenario in the country and every other car-maker bringing in their flagships, it is hard to say as of now whether this French proposition will be well acknowledged by the Indian audience. But, with the prices starting at Rs.36.67 lakhs (ex-showroom), and keeping the Indian bargaining mentality in mind, this Frenchie is bound to turn heads.
