2021 is a piece of history now, a year that has been difficult for many at the same time. It’s also the year that gave India the highest number of Unicorns and startup founders. Since the onset of the pandemic, the automobile industry has been unfurled with supply-side issues, and most manufacturers are not able to meet their customer demands resulting in more extended waiting periods. One thing the pandemic did was push the personal mobility space and put more cars and bikes on the roads. Infrastructure needs to keep up now, or commuting in cities will be a nightmare. WFH is definitely helping keep the streets moving and, along with the EV race, is probably the answer to global warming.
Hydrogen fuels is a cleaner fuel, and the EV batteries have a side to the story which completely negates its positives. But battery tech is evolving fast, and when pitted against internal combustion engines, EVs are miles ahead in reducing carbon footprint even in the solid-state they are in.
But what a year 2021 was, extreme from all angles and some of the most iconic machines were either reincarnated or born Suzuki Hayabusa, Ferrari Roma, Lamborghini Huracan STO, Audi e-tron GT, Mercedes GLE63AMG, Mahindra XUV700, Hyundai i20 Nline, Jaguar i-pace, Tata punch, Nissan Magnite and the list goes on. At BBC Topgear India, we travelled to Ladakh with Volvo XC90 & XC60, Shimla with BMW X5M Competition, Kerala with Jeep compass, and did crazy things. Raced XC60 and a nimble Go-kart at the worlds’ highest go-kart track at Nubra valley and reviewed an Airbus Chopper and Lamborghini Huracan in the same breath maxed honda city to 208 km and GLE63 AMG to 295km at NATRAX. All these with masks still on.
With 2022 here, it brings hope and bundles of excitement; the world has seen enough, most successful people who were racing on full throttle have rightfully mellowed down and realised there is more to life than just work. Giving is more important than taking. Spending time with family and friends is more important than meeting that could be managed over zoom or deferred till tomorrow. Somewhere the spiritual side of everyone has been stroked this year at some point, and hopefully, that trigger stays awaken deep inside. The year 2022 is just another year in your lifes’ many chapters; what you do with it is on you, but staying happy in whatever you do is a must, and that’s why perhaps it’s always said “Happy New Year”.
