Ever wondered what home furniture would look like if an automotive manufacturer had a go at it? Well, say no more, because this is the newest collection of furniture design by Bentley Home.
Made in collaboration with Bentley Motors, the 2021 Bentley Home Collection headlines with four new furniture designs, each featuring a combination of unique materials and finishes that blend innovation, technology and fine craft. The Aldford Table, the Ramsey Sofa and Loveseat and the Styal Desk elegantly sport a unique lacquered finish and new fabric produced from marble powder among a choice of finishes.
What is Degradé?
Degradé lacquering is key to the overall aesthetic of the 2021 Bentley Home Collection, and brings a sense of quintessential luxury that involves an intricate and complex process to manufacture. Before the Degradé essence can be created, a coat of varnish is hand-applied to protect the wood. A master craftsman then uses an airbrush to apply the colour by hand, with just the right dose of lacquer, gradually drawing away from the wood to accentuate the colour gradient and faithfully replicate every detail of the natural shading. After this, a round of polishing is required to give the product body, depth and solidity. Four coats of varnish are then applied before a final round of polishing.
..and what’s this new fabric?
MARM \ MORE® is an innovative, ethical new fabric making its debut in the furniture world, developed and patented for Bentley Home. The new fabric utilises the genuine dust that is a bi-product of marble production. Sourced and produced in Italy from start to finish, master craftsmen are required to complete every step on the journey from powder to furniture wrap. Marble is known to be the ultimate material for sculpture and architecture, and is now stylishly and innovatively reinterpreted for fabric. Harnessing the natural power of marble, it restores value to its unique dust, transforming it into a textile that offers unmatched technical performance and aesthetic qualities.
Developing the new fabric was a complex and lengthy process. Production of the fabric requires the powder from high-quality marble to be mixed with a special composite to obtain a liquid microfilm. The microfilm recipe is then coupled with the selected cotton base textile to produce this unique fabric finish. This innovation in textile development uses renewable resources only and results in significant waste reduction.
