India’s most popular scooter gets yet another revamp

You meet the nicest people on a Honda they say, no? In India though, you meet a lot of people on Hondas. And the biggest reason for that is the Honda Activa, which has been the highest selling scooter in India for well over a decade now! In fact its hard to believe that the Activa featured on these pages is the sixth generation Activa – two generations ahead of the mobile networks we use! It’s almost a case study of sorts – how to make a reliable, comfortable and rather simple scooter that will appeal to everyone from college kids to grandparents.

And given how good the original formula for the Activa was, Honda hasn’t really felt the need to alter it much. But for the sixth generation Activa (coincides perfectly with the timing for the BS6 emission norms!) Honda has gone in for a raft of changes inside out, though the styling hasn’t been altered much, so you can still recognise it as an Activa. But for the first time the Activa 110 sports an external fuel lid, a much needed update. The Activa 6G also gets a dual-purpose button for the opening the external fuel lid and seat, positioned next to the ignition slot. Another big update is that the 109.5cc air-cooled motor gets fuel injection now, to meet the stricter BS6 norms. The 6G also benefits from the Activa 125’s silent start system and thumbing the starter button is a joy – purely for its quietness!

But wait, there’s more. For the first time in its history, the Activa 110 gets telescopic forks upfront – the lack of which we’ve always lamented – along with a bigger, 12 inch front wheel and increased ground clearance. The rear wheel is suspended on a three-step adjustable suspension while the wheelbase is up by a significant 22mm, which has also resulted in a floorboard that’s longer by 23mm. Good for them six footers! There’s a new malfunction light onboard as well now. In fact, Honda has made quite a few changes to the engine internals and other mechanical parts to improve refinement further. And all the changes come together to offer a better feeling, right from the moment you thumb the starter and the engine comes on, with zero vibration or sound.

The engine feels velvety from the word go with ample bottom-end grunt, allaying fears of power losses in the interest of lesser emissions. Riding the Activa 6G is a new experience indeed, one that will particularly surprise you if you have ridden the 5G. That’s because the bigger wheel at the front and telescopic suspension have massively improved the low-speed ride. The 6G also feels a lot more composed around corners now, along with a more planted feel at higher speeds in a straight line. The long list of updates have made the evergreen Activa an even more interesting proposition – let’s admit it, there’s a range of very good scooters on sale in the country today, but the Activa still holds it own, despite getting progressively more expensive over the years. For most people wanting to buy a scooter in India, the Activa has more or less been the default choice. And given how impressive the new Activa 6G is, I don’t think that’s changing anytime soon!
