McLaren’s newest plug-in hybrid supercar, the Artura.

McLaren Artura

Until a couple of years ago when you heard of a hybrid car, the first image to pop in your head would be of the Toyota Prius. The Prius has been on the receiving end of hate unlike no other vehicle every produced. We even let Pontiac slide with what they did with the Aztek but for some reason the dislike for the Prius always remained. But has anyone realized that if it was not for hybrid technology of the Prius, many of the supercars and hypercars we see at this day and age would never exist due to the ridiculous emission norms automakers have to follow.

Speaking of hybrid powertrains, McLaren have just announced the launch of their all new supercar, the Artura which uses a turbo-petrol V6 engine combined with an electric motor. Now before you start moaning and complaining of the two cylinders being reduced in the engine compartment, let me give you some headline figures. A combined output of 671 bhp and 720Nm (I see what you did there McLaren) propels the Artura from 0 to 100km/h in just 3 seconds, 0 to 200km/h in just 8.3 seconds and 0 to 300km/h in a blistering 21.5 seconds. The PHEV does have a few tricks up its sleeve too, it cover a distance of 30kms and charges its 7.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack in just 2.5 hours. But what is really impressive is the gearbox in the Artura doesn’t consist of a reverse gear, instead the EV motor simply runs the other direction reversing the supercar.

The McLaren Artura will be replacing the ongoing 570S model and before you get all excited about this McLaren, let me be the barer of bad news. No McLaren has no intention of setting up a base in India and was just rumors. So if you do urge to get the Artura in India, you will have to import it privately but if like me you are just happy looking at the pictures of it so go ahead and right click on the images below and save them as your wallpapers! Now that is something that’s free and enjoyable too.
