Mercedes-Benz has launched the latest iteration of the GLS in India, today. Referred to as the S-Class of SUVs, the 2020 GLS comes with a host of changes. But first, a few numbers. The GLS has been around in India for almost a decade. In that time, Mercedes-Benz has shipped more than 6,700 units of their biggest SUV. Worldwide, that number stands at 5,70,000.
However, back to the all-new GLS. First things first, the 2020 GLS is 77mm longer, 22mm wider and the wheelbase is up by 60mm. As far as design is concerned, there’s new 3D LED taillamps complemented by new 21-inch alloy wheels. There’s an all-new front fascia complete with new Multibeam LED headlamps with 112 LED in each unit.
On the inside, there’s a beautifully integrated console in the centre called the Widescreen Cockpit, which measures in at 12.3-inches. That’s not all, there are a total 11 USB chargers and two wireless chargers along with electronically folding seats. In fact, if the second and third-row seats are down, the total boot space measures in at 2400 litres! Apart from this, it comes with all the creature comforts one expects from Mercedes-Benz, a whole lot more besides. Also, let’s not forget the MBUX infotainment system with Voice Assist.
As far as the powertrains are concerned, the all-new GLS comes with two BS6-compliant options. First, a 2925cc, six-cylinder diesel motor which produces 325bhp and 700Nm of torque. Second, a 2999cc, six-cylinder petrol engine which produces 362bhp and 500Nm of torque. Both engines come mated to a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission which incorporates a transfer case with electronically controlled multi-plate clutch fitted as standard. However, the petrol unit comes with a 48v battery pack which gives with an EQ boost. That means an additional 21bhp and 250Nm! Apart from the large panoramic sunroof and all-new interior layout, there’s also the MBUX Interior Assistant, which allows contactless gestures.
Other than all these things, it also AIRMATIC Suspension with ADS+, Blind Spot Assist, 9 airbags, off-road ABS, Mercedes me connect, five-zone climate control, Active Park Assist with a 360-degree camera and a lot more. Mercedes has priced both the petrol and diesel-powered 2020 GLS at Rs 99.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India except Kerala). What do you make of the new S-Class of SUVs?
