SOME ROADS AND CARS ARE MEANT FOR EACH OTHER; WHEN YOU GO INTO AN UNKNOWN LAND, A MUSCULAR 4X4 CAN TAKE YOU OUT OF ANY STICKY SITUATION INCLUDING GETTING RESPECT FROM THE MEXICAN CARTEL.”

Last month, I went on a road trip from Los Angeles to Ensenada -the wine valley of Mexico.
Jeep Wrangler Rubicon gave me company and munched over 1000 + Km in a three-day trip and then immediately after that drove the Mclaren 720S Spider in Dubai for another three days. If the cars were reversed, then it would be a disaster, especially having the road-hugging sports car that too in eye-popping Papaya Spark colour. Some roads and cars are meant for each other; when you go into an unknown land, a muscular 4X4 can take you out of any sticky situation, including getting respect from the Mexican cartel. With the McLaren, surely I would have been kidnapped and deported back minus the car. Road tripping is always fun, but for us, when shooting with expensive vehicles and gears can get complicated despite securing permissions. Like Mexican cops pulled us thrice, and we had to grease their palms for it may be looking expensive!

Monsoons have hit us, and it’s great to peep outside the windows, but the traffic snarls and waterlogging can create havoc in your senses. Especially if you are driving a sedan, you have to be very careful with waterlogged streets or expect a fat repair bill. What is appalling is in spite of paying so much road taxes, almost 50% with GST, Road Tax, all the potholes surface back in monsoon or rather the inferior quality tarmac gets washed away so the contractors can fill their coffers again. I hope someday we get basic city infrastructure of well-paved roads everywhere, not asking for much.

We had three big launches last month. Let’s start with the Mahindra Scorpio N — and with this N, they have absolutely nailed it with the price points, performance and features. The facelifted Hyundai Venue and Maruti Brezza had been given huge makeovers and can be termed borderline new cars. Did you know that Maruti, which has more than 50% automobile market share in the country, never sold a car with a sunroof? This goes to show the sunroof may be an overhyped car feature which is touted as a necessity but is a luxury seldom used. The 2022 Brezza now comes with a sunroof!

Don’t forget to browse through our international features of Lamborghini Countach and Hyundai Ioniq; both draw the line between old school charm of IC and where the future is headed.

Enjoy the issue. Enjoy the monsoon
