Covid-19 not had just only impacted the automobile industry at all large but also crumbled the economy to a greater extent. Sales figures were at an all-time low, and prices of raw materials were also at an all-time high made the life of an auto-manufacturer a nightmare. But now, easing lockdown and vaccination drive have come as a ray of hope for all. Demands for vehicles have increased with cushioning lockdown, and production has also expanded to cope with the orders. Though with several roadblocks, manufacturers kept launching their new cars for the Indian market in 2021 and are expected to do so this year. Please take a read on the most anticipated car launches we are looking forward to in the year 2022.
Toyota Hilux is one of the most popular pick-up vehicles in the world. The brand is synonymous with reliability and durability in India. The Hilux will be no exception as it is based on the same IMV2 architecture that underpins Innova Crysta and Fortuner. Some unofficial statement also reveals that the booking for Hilux has already been commenced ahead of its launch. Even though Toyota India has not made any official statement on the engine and powertrain, we believe it will be equipped with the same 2.8 diesel engine that we get with the Fortuner. After Hilux gets launched in India, it will have a direct rivalry with Isuzu D-max. We expect prices to be around Rs.23-29 lakhs.
Mahindra, in recent years, has uplifted its brand image by launching innovative and upmarket products in the Indian market. The Scorpio is expected to come in the first half of 2022. The SUV is being spied testing on the roads before its launch. It will have the same ladder-on-frame chassis that underpins its famous lifestyle SUV- Thar. The all-new Scorpio will have some cosmetic updates along with feature-rich interiors. The SUV is expected to get a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engine that delivers 152hp of power and 320Nm of torque, along with a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that generates power of 130hp and torque of 320Nm. Mahindra is very competitive with its pricing, and we expect the Scorpio to be priced around Rs.11-13 lakhs.
French manufacturer Citroen launched C5 Aircross in February 2021, and we were impressed with its overall offerings. The auto manufacturer is betting high on the parts localisation for its cars in India. C3 will be Citroen’s answer to the Maruti Ignis, Nissan Magnite and Tata Punch. Citroen has already made statements with C3 as the most comfortable and stylish SUV. It will be based on a modular CMP platform. C3 is expected to get a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, mated to a manual or automatic gearbox. Prices are expected to start around 5lakh rupees.
The Audi Q7 will be launched in the first month of January 2022. It’s one of the most flagship 7-seater SUVs for the Indian market by Audi. The facelifted Audi Q7 will come equipped with a petrol engine option only. The SUV will get a V6,3-litre engine that churns out 340hp of power and 500Nm of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. It will have a slew of updated features with the brand’s Quatrro AWD system. The prices are expected to be around a crores rupees.
Skoda India has launched Slavia in 2021, which is a clear indication that its sibling will soon make its way in the Indian market as Virtus. It’s a 5-seater mid-size sedan made on the MQB A0 IN platform. It will soon replace the Vento. The car will come equipped with a 1-litre TSI engine and could possibly borrow a 1.5-litre engine from Taigun SUV. It will go up against Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Skoda Slavia and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. It is expected to be priced at Rs.10-13 lakhs.
6)Tata Altroz EV
Indian auto brand is taking electrification goals very seriously and planning to launch premium hatchback electric vehicle based on its going model Altroz. Tata has already bought Nexon EV and Tigor EV in the Indian market with different battery options. Once it is launched with an enhanced battery range, it will be a perfect choice as a city commuter. Prices are expected to be sub 10 lakh rupees.
7)Tesla Model 3
If there is one car that country is looking very excited to is none other than Tesla Model 3. Tesla has a brand image as the most futuristic electric car manufacturer in the world. In India, we can’t wait to witness its Model 3, which is expected to launch in late 2022. Globally, Model 3 is the entry-level electric sedan by Tesla that comes with single and dual motor options. In India, we cannot confirm which battery options it will come equipped with. It will come to India as a CBU (completely built unit), thus expected to be priced at around Rs.65lakh.
Jeep Meridian will be a 7- seater SUV based on Compass. It is widely known as a Commander in the international market. It has been spotted testing on the Indian roads several times. The SUV is expected to get the same powertrain and engine option that we get on Compass, a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine and a 2-litre diesel engine. Once launched, it will go up against MG Gloster and Toyota Fortuner. Prices are expected to be around Rs.30-35 lakhs.
9)Mini Cooper SE
The Cooper SE is based on the MINI 3 door and shares the space, dimensions, design and interiors with its ICE-powered sibling. According to reports, the all-new Mini Copper SE recently sold out in India before its launch. The car will come equipped with a 32.6 kWh battery unit that produces around 182 hp of power and 320 Nm of torque. It is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2022 with a price tag of approximately Rs.50 lakhs.
10) Ford Mustang Mach-E
Even though American auto manufacturers have shut their manufacturing plants in India, they have promised to sell their flagship models via a completely built-up unit in India. The Mustang Mach-E is one such product that will come to India in 2022. The car is globally made its debut in 2019 with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel-drive options. The car gets two battery options of 68kwh and 88kwh; the latter comes equipped in a flagship GT with 480 hp. Expect the car to be priced at around Rs.95 lakh.
