The lifestyle pick-up truck segment in India is extremely niche, and Toyota India is ambitious with its upcoming Hilux, which was unveiled recently. Toyota Hilux has been the renowned name in the pick-truck segment around the globe since 1968, and now, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has finally unveiled the model for the Indian market. Here are the top 5 things you need to know about Indian-spec Toyota Hilux.

1. Exteriors

Toyota Hilux is based on the same platform that underpins the Fortuner and the Innova, which are two of the highest-selling models for Toyota in India. The pick-up truck is 5325mm long, 1855mm wide and 1815mm tall. The Hilux gets the bold trapezoidal grille with chrome surrounds and an LED headlight setup that somewhat resembles the Fortuner and Innova. We get newly designed front bumpers with Piano black accents on the front. The vehicle comes in two variants, out of which the standard variant features 17-inch alloy wheels, whereas its High variant gets 18-inch wheels. The car also gets chrome-plated door handles, LED front fog lamps and rear fog lamps. The Hilux will be available in 5 single-tone paint schemes, out of which the Standard variant will come with only Super White Color. In comparison, the top variant comes with four different colour options- Emotional Red, Gray Metallic, White Pearl Crystal Shine and Silver Metallic.

2. Interiors

The Hilux features an all black design layout somewhat similar to the Fortuner on the inside. It gets a large TFT multi-information display and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Hilux also comes equipped with cruise control, voice recognition switches on the steering wheel, six speakers and a tilt & telescopic steering column. The pick-up truck also features dual-zone AC controls , front parking sensors, 7 airbags and comes equipped with two driving modes- ECO and Power.

3. Engine

The Hilux gets the same 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that we get in the Fortuner. Unfortunately, the Hilux will not come equipped with any petrol engine option as of now. The engine churns out around 201bhp of power and 420Nm of torque for the 6-speed manual transmission, whereas in the automatic transmission, the engine delivers an enormous 500Nm of torque. The Hilux also has 4X4 capabilities and a limited-slip differential for better traction and grip while off-roading.

4. Features

The Hilux is the flagship pick-up vehicle from Toyota in India, so expect all the necessary nifty features to come equipped with the car that makes the Hilux a proper adventure vehicle. It gets a tough frame with exceptional Torsional and Bending Rigidity. It gets Downhill Assist Control and Active Traction Control. The Hilux has also got an electronic differential lock and an approach and departure angle of 28.65 degrees and 26.35 degrees, respectively.

5. Rivals and Pricing

The Hilux as an overall package looks highly appealing and capable. Once launched, it will go up against the Isuzu-D Max V-Cross and, to some extent, will compete against Toyota Fortuner , Jeep Compass and the Citroen C5 Aircross. Toyota has not revealed the Hilux prices yet, but we expect the price range to be somewhere between Rs.23 – 27lakhs. If Toyota launches the model within the mentioned price bracket, then the Hilux could be one of the promising purchases for the lifestyle vehicle category.
