British motorcycle manufacturers, Triumph has launched the new Speed Triple 1200 RS earlier today and is priced at Rs 16.95 Lakhs (ex-showroom, India). Bookings have begun at Triumph dealerships with the booking amount being Rs 1 Lakh, the 1200 RS is currently limited to only 30 units across India and is available as a first come first serve basis.
Compared to the ongoing model, the Speed Triple 1200 RS is designed completely from ground-up with a sharper body line, broad shoulder silhouette and a striking new dynamic headlight design which is similar to the current Street Triple RS. Even the new free flowing exhaust is reworked to sit in the conventional spot rather than a twin exhaust setup that was mounted closer to the rear seat in the older bike. Riding ergonomics have also improved with a 13mm wider handlebar and a slightly inwards footrest position improving the ground clearance and increased riding comfort.
Engine and Chassis
While the older generation of the Speed Triple was powered by a 1050cc in-line 3-cylinder engine making 148bhp and 117Nm of torque, the 1200RS has an all-new 1160cc in-line 3-cylinder engine producing 177bhp and 125Nm of torque which is 29bhp and 5Nm more than the older generation. The 6-speed gearbox too is optimized for a smoother gear shift and furthermore, have Triumph’s shift Assist up-and-down quickshifter. The 1200 RS weighs in at just 198kgs (wet) thanks to an all-aluminum frame chassis which reduces the overall weight by 10kgs.
Suspension and Brakes
As standard, the Speed Triple is fitted with a fully-adjustable Öhlins suspension. Both front & rear and braking responsibilities are given to the twin Brembo Stylema radial monobloc front calipers and a single Brembo twin-piston rear caliper. Metzeler Racetec RR tyres provide the grip to plant its power on the road.
The Speed Triple 1200 RS is fitted with a host of rider aids like the optimized cornering ABS control, switchable cornering traction control, and front wheel-lift control. Triumph offers five different riding modes including a ‘Track’ specific riding mode with preset track riding settings. Riders can also customize the aids to suit their preferred riding style with the ‘Rider’ mode.
The new Speed Triple is includes technology such as a 5-inch TFT instrument cluster and a full keyless system which also includes a keyless fuel filler cap. A new ‘My Triumph’ connectivity system is also fitted as standard which allows you to configure turn-by-turn navigation, control music and phone connectivity displayed the instrument screen. Buyers will also be offered with around 35 different accessories to choose from while purchasing their 1200 RS.
