Turbo vs Hybrid | Which Luxury Executive Sedan To Buy?

Blend of comfort, performance, and prestige - these are attributes one would expect from an executive sedan. Two strong contenders in this segment are the Toyota Camry Hybrid and the Skoda Superb, both offered in well-equipped top-specifications are retailed overseas. Choosing between them can be a head-scratcher but fret not, we are here to help.

Powertrains and Performance

The Toyota Camry Hybrid boasts a 2.5L four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor for a combined output of 208hp. This translates to a smooth, refined driving experience with excellent fuel efficiency. Toyota claims a mileage of 19.1 kmpl, making it a compelling choice for those seeking an eco-friendly option. The hybrid system seamlessly switches between electric and petrol power, ensuring a quiet and comfortable ride.

The Skoda Superb, on the other hand, adopts a more traditional approach with a 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine churning out 190 horsepower. This engine offers a peppier and more engaging driving experience. While the Superb doesn't boast hybrid efficiency, it delivers a satisfying surge of power, particularly appealing to driving enthusiasts.

Question is - are you buying an executive sedan to drive it, or be chauffeured around in it?

Ride and Handling

The Toyota Camry Hybrid prioritizes a comfortable ride. Its suspension is tuned to soak up bumps and imperfections on the road, resulting in a serene cabin experience. The steering feels light and maneuverable, making it suitable for city driving.

The Skoda Superb offers a sharper driving experience. Its suspension leans towards a sportier setup, providing better handling and a more connected feel to the road. However, this might come at the expense of a slightly stiffer ride compared to the Camry.

Technology and Features

Both cars come loaded with features. The Toyota Camry Hybrid offers a panoramic sunroof, a premium sound system, a heads-up display, and a comprehensive Toyota Safety Sense suite that includes features like automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.

The Skoda Superb doesn't disappoint either. It features a virtual cockpit instrument cluster, a large touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ambient lighting, and a suite of Skoda's safety features including adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

Safety

Both the Toyota Camry Hybrid and the Skoda Superb have received high safety ratings from Global NCAP. The Camry scored a perfect 5-star rating, while the Superb received a commendable 4-star rating. Both cars come equipped with a plethora of airbags, ABS, and traction control systems, ensuring occupant safety.

After-Sales Service

Toyota is renowned for its exceptional after-sales service network in India. Owning a Camry guarantees peace of mind with readily available service centers, trained technicians, and a reputation for reliability.

Skoda's service network, while improving, isn't as widespread as Toyota's. Ownership might involve longer waiting times for service appointments or parts replacements.

Verdict

There was a time when the Camry Hybrid was considered expensive because of its hybrid powertrain and high taxes it attracted. But with the Superb taking the CBU route, high taxes are being imposed on this sedan as well. At Rs 41.7 lakh for the Camry Hybrid and Rs 54 lakh for the Spuerb, our choice between the two is the more superior and sophisticated Camry, however it all boils down to your priorities. For those seeking:

Fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness: The Toyota Camry Hybrid is the clear winner.

A comfortable and luxurious ride: Both cars excel in this aspect, but the Camry might offer a slight edge with a wider range of damping on offer

A powerful and engaging driving experience: The Skoda Superb takes the lead with its turbocharged engine.

A spacious and well-appointed cabin: Both cars offer ample space, but the Superb's design might feel slightly more driver-focused.

A worry-free ownership experience: Toyota's after-sales service network provides a clear advantage.
