BMW has unveiled the iX3, its first production model under the much-anticipated Neue Klasse programme. The all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) marks not just an update to the company’s EV line-up, but the beginning of a complete technological overhaul that will filter through to 40 BMW models by 2027.
A Fresh Design Language
The iX3 introduces a pared-back, more purposeful design approach for BMW. The front features a new interpretation of the brand’s signature “four-eyed” face, with vertical kidney grilles and horizontal light signatures replacing chrome details. Inside, a wrap-around cockpit blends into the door trims, while digital animations greet occupants on entry.
Technology at the Core
BMW has equipped the iX3 with what it calls a zonal electronics architecture, powered by four centralised computers. This setup simplifies wiring, enables faster processing, and allows for over-the-air updates that can bring new features over time. The Panoramic iDrive, built on the new BMW Operating System X, integrates a wide digital display, head-up projection, and a redesigned steering interface. Voice commands are supported by upgraded AI assistants, with personalisation options baked into the system.
Driving and Performance
At the heart of the iX3 lies BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. Using new cylindrical cell batteries and redesigned electric motors, the system promises a 20% increase in energy density and efficiency. With an 800-volt architecture, the SUV supports ultra-fast 400 kW charging, capable of adding 372 km of range in just 10 minutes. On a full charge, it claims up to 805 km of driving range (WLTP). For drivers, energy recuperation now handles most braking needs, while adaptive assistance systems add motorway and city driving support.
Sustainability Efforts
BMW says the iX3 is built with a “design for circularity” approach, incorporating around one-third secondary raw materials. During development, CO₂ emissions in the supply chain were cut by 35%. In practical terms, the SUV can achieve a carbon break-even point against combustion rivals after roughly 21,500 km when charged with Europe’s mixed grid, or even earlier with renewables.
What It Means
The iX3 is more than another electric SUV; it represents BMW’s first tangible step into its Neue Klasse future. With a cleaner design, faster charging, and a software-first approach, it signals the company’s intent to redefine its brand identity in the electric era.
