So you want a Mercedes G-Class that can go rock climbing, outrun some supercars, and still let the wind ruin your salon appointment. Good news. Brabus has delivered not one but two convertible versions of the already outrageous Mercedes-AMG G63.
The tuner has unveiled the Brabus 800 Cabrio and the even taller Brabus XL 800 Cabrio. Both turn the already dramatic G-Wagen into something that feels part luxury safari truck and part open-air nightclub.
789bhp. Yes really.
Power comes from a tuned 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that now makes 789bhp and about 1000Nm of torque. That gives the standard 800 Cabrio enough shove to sprint from 0 to 100kmph in 4 seconds and reach a limited top speed of 240kmph.
The XL 800 is taller and heavier thanks to those portal axles and 470mm of ground clearance. So it takes a slightly slower 4.6 seconds for the 0 to 100kmph run and tops out at 210kmph. Still brisk for something with the aerodynamics of a five-star hotel.
Wide, loud and unapologetic
You get a widebody kit, carbon everywhere and enormous 24-inch wheels that appear better suited to a luxury yacht. The exhaust tips also glow, because of course they do. It is subtle only if you live on Mars.
Roof goes up. The roof goes down. No arguments.
Both models get an electronic soft top roof system made from more than 500 re-engineered parts. It drops or rises in 20 seconds and leaves a roll bar for structural reassurance. The rest is open sky and fresh air. Or dust. Or monsoon rain if you are brave.
How much? Brabus will let you guess.
Pricing has not been revealed, but considering the G63 already sits in exotic money territory and Brabus rarely works for free, expect a figure well into multi-crore territory. Someone, somewhere, is already signing the cheque.
The G-Class Cabriolet may be returning in factory form soon, but for those who cannot wait and want maximum attention per kilometre, these two Brabus creations should more than do the job.
And yes, prepare for ruined hairstyles. That is part of the experience.
