Coming Soon: A Drifting Movie You Could Star In

The most recent motorsport films have followed the usual route, featuring Formula 1 here, Le Mans there, and a bit of Ferrari-versus-Ford melodrama somewhere in between. But it seems someone’s finally looked at the smoky underworld of sideways racing and thought, “Why not make that the story?”

That someone is Sung Kang. Yes, the very same one who drove an orange RX-7 in Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift, which might be the most culturally significant drifting reference outside of Japan. Only this time, he’s not just acting, he’s directing too.

Kang’s next project is called Drifter, and unlike most scripted dramas about racing, this one is about to get very real. Quite literally. Large portions of the movie will be filmed live during the Legends of Drift event on August 23-24, 2025, at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. There will be real cars, real drivers, and real tyre smoke.

Also real? Your chance of being in the movie.

That’s because the event doubles up as a live film shoot. If you’re in the crowd, you might just end up in a Hollywood production. Try not to spill your nachos.

Alongside Kang, the film ropes in a few familiar names. Rutledge Wood, the American racing presenter, is involved. As is actor James Pumphrey, and Brian Scotto, co-founder of the Hoonigan brand. Then there’s Adam LZ, actual Formula DRIFT driver and internet drifting star, who’ll take on the lead role.

Plot details? Sparse. The official word is “drifting,” which could mean anything from a gritty garage drama to 90 minutes of oversteer. But with real competition footage and a cast deeply rooted in car culture, there’s hope it will finally get drifting some cinematic justice.

There’s no official release date yet, but Kang has promised more details soon. For now, all we know is this: motorsport cinema is going sideways and that might just be a good thing.
