Mercedes-Benz has taken another step toward electrifying its lineup with the unveiling of the new Mercedes-Benz VLE, an all-electric people mover designed to blend limousine-like comfort with the practicality of a large multi-purpose vehicle.
The VLE is an important model for the German manufacturer because it is the first vehicle built on the new VAN.EA (Van Electric Architecture) platform. This dedicated electric architecture will underpin a future generation of Mercedes electric vans and luxury MPVs, signalling a major transformation in the brand’s van strategy.
A new era for Mercedes electric vans
The VLE effectively succeeds the earlier electric MPV from Mercedes and introduces a platform designed specifically for battery-powered mobility. The VAN.EA architecture has been engineered to support a range of van sizes and configurations, meaning it will eventually serve as the foundation for several upcoming electric vans and luxury transport vehicles from the brand.
Mercedes-Benz says the new platform aims to combine the comfort and refinement expected from a luxury car with the versatility and practicality of an MPV. The result is a vehicle that could appeal to private owners, large families, as well as premium shuttle and chauffeur services.
The VLE will spearhead a broader electric van lineup from Mercedes-Benz, with additional models expected to follow in the coming years.
Design inspired by the Vision V concept
The design of the Mercedes-Benz VLE draws inspiration from the futuristic 2025 Vision V concept, which previewed Mercedes-Benz’s vision for the next generation of luxury vans.
While the production model tones down some of the more dramatic concept elements, the overall silhouette remains sleek and modern. The VLE features a streamlined body, smooth surfaces and a closed-off grille typical of electric vehicles.
LED lighting plays a major role in the vehicle’s design identity. The front fascia is expected to feature distinctive LED light signatures surrounding the grille area, while the rear receives vertical tail lamps and a wide tailgate that emphasises the van’s width.
Despite its large dimensions, Mercedes-Benz has paid significant attention to aerodynamics. Optimised airflow helps improve efficiency and contributes to the vehicle’s long driving range.
It rides on alloys ranging from 19-to 22-inches.
A lounge-like cabin with a theatre-sized screen
Inside, the VLE takes a dramatic step forward in redefining what the cabin of a luxury van can be. Mercedes-Benz has designed the interior to function almost like a mobile lounge, prioritising passenger comfort, entertainment and flexibility.
At the front of the cabin, the driver area incorporates Mercedes-Benz’s latest digital technologies. The dashboard features a 10.25-inch driver’s display, 14-inch touchscreen and 14-inch passenger screen across the width of the cabin.
One of the standout features is a massive 31-inch cinema-style display positioned in the rear passenger area. This ultra-wide screen is designed to deliver a theatre-like viewing experience, allowing passengers to stream content, watch films or even conduct presentations while travelling.
Combined with a premium surround sound system and advanced connectivity features, the setup transforms the rear cabin into an entertainment hub, particularly suited to long journeys.
Ambient lighting is another key highlight of the interior. Customisable LED lighting strips run throughout the cabin and can be adjusted to different colours and brightness levels, allowing passengers to tailor the atmosphere to their preference.
Flexible seating layouts for different uses
Versatility is central to the VLE’s design. The electric MPV will be offered with two- to six-seater seating configurations, allowing it to adapt to different roles depending on the customer’s needs. Some versions will focus on passenger capacity, offering seating for up to eight occupants. These variants could appeal to families or mobility services that require maximum seating flexibility. Other configurations will prioritise luxury and rear-seat comfort. In these variants, the second-row seats are expected to resemble individual lounge-style chairs, featuring reclining functions, generous legroom and integrated armrests.
Massive range
Under the skin, the VLE will be offered with both single-motor and dual-motor electric powertrains.
The entry point to the lineup will be the VLE 300, which produces 276hp and delivers a claimed WLTP range of over 700km. Power comes from a large 115kWh NMC battery pack, while an 800V electrical system enables rapid charging — allowing the van to gain around 320km of driving range in just 15 minutes.
Sitting above it will be the VLE 400, a more performance-oriented version equipped with all-wheel drive and producing 415hp. Mercedes says this variant can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 6.5 seconds.
Further down the line, the company plans to introduce variants powered by smaller 80kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries. In addition, Mercedes will also offer combustion-powered vans based on a separate VAN.CA platform.
A broader electric van family on the horizon
The VLE is just the beginning of Mercedes-Benz’s electric van strategy. The company has confirmed that the VAN.EA architecture will underpin a family of electric vans, including a more luxurious flagship model expected to be called the VLS.
The VLS will likely focus even more heavily on rear-seat comfort and premium features, targeting buyers who want a high-end chauffeur-driven vehicle.
Together, these models signal Mercedes-Benz’s ambition to expand its presence in the luxury MPV market, which is growing rapidly in several global markets.
