Mercedes-Benz has been making the G-Class for 46 years, and its popularity shows no sign of slowing. The 600,000th unit, an all-electric G580 with EQ Technology finished in Obsidian Black metallic, has just rolled out of the Graz, Austria, factory. Rather than keeping it for the museum, Mercedes will hand the keys to a customer.
Two years ago, the company celebrated the 500,000 mark with a retro-themed edition that inspired the G-Class Edition, Stronger Than the 1980s. Now, producing another 100,000 units in such a short time shows just how strong the demand is. For perspective, Mercedes took three years to move from 400,000 to 500,000, and the same duration from 300,000 to 400,000.
The G-Class is now more popular than ever, despite being one of the oldest-looking models in the lineup. The SUV commands premium prices and often comes with waiting lists stretching into years. According to Mercedes, it is also the most customised model in their range. Over 90 percent of buyers choose at least one Manufaktur option, with the average buyer selecting three. Since last year, customers have had access to over 20,000 exterior paint shades through the brand’s personalisation programme.
Despite its steady evolution since its debut in 1979, the G-Class has kept its iconic boxy silhouette. Underneath, it remains a serious off-road tool, with a ladder frame, a two-speed transfer case, and three locking differentials. Modern versions may have become quicker, quieter, and vastly more luxurious, but the fundamentals are unchanged.
Here’s to the next milestone! 700,000 G-Wagens and counting.
