Porsche’s wireless charger won’t fry your cat

When Porsche’s all-electric Cayenne arrives next year, it won’t just be about speed, power, or range. Instead, it might be remembered for the moment Porsche brought smartphone-style wireless charging to cars. Yes, the new Cayenne can be juiced up simply by parking on what looks like a very expensive floor mat.

Highlights

  • Porsche’s first wireless EV charger set to debut with the next-gen Cayenne Electric.

  • Floor plate delivers up to 11kW charging, at 90% efficiency.

  • Safety sensors prevent accidents (and keep pets safe).

  • Works over an 11–16cm air gap without reducing ground clearance.

  • Expected price: around ₹3.8 lakh for the mat, ₹1.3 lakh for the car-side unit (before taxes).

Key Details

The wireless charger consists of two parts: a 50kg air-cooled floor plate that sits in your garage or driveway, and a receiver plate fitted under the Cayenne. Unlike your typical 7.4kW wallbox, Porsche’s system can charge at up to 11kW, depending on local power infrastructure.

The system is smart enough to perform a 20-second pre-check before it starts charging. That means if your cat, dog, or even your toolbox is sitting on the mat, the charger won’t fire up. It’s also designed to survive being driven over, is waterproof, and resistant to dirt.

Parking is made foolproof with Porsche’s built-in digital parking guide, which helps you line up with the plate for maximum efficiency.

Pricing and Compatibility

Porsche has hinted at European prices: about €4,300 (₹3.8 lakh) for the floor unit and €1,500 (₹1.3 lakh) for the car’s receiver plate, sold separately. The idea is you could buy multiple plates—home, office, holiday garage—without needing multiple cars.

The system can be retrofitted to the upcoming Cayenne Electric and future Porsche EVs, but not current Taycan or Macan models.

It’s clever, convenient, and suitably Porsche. But like everything with a Stuttgart crest, it’s not cheap. Think of it as the iPhone Lightning vs USB-C debate—except your cat’s safety is included in the price.
