The updated Mercedes GLB gets more tech more room more range

The GLB may be a compact SUV on paper, but it now seats up to seven people. Yes, seven in a car this size. The second row slides and reclines and the third row is workable for passengers up to about 1.7 metres tall, which means adults can survive short stints and children will be perfectly at home.

Boot space is generous. There is a rear luggage area that goes up to 540-litres in the five-seat setup and a front boot of 127 litres, which will happily swallow backpacks, groceries or one too many footballs.

Under the skin, the new GLB is fully electric. Two versions launch internationally, including the GLB 250+ with 200 kW, which is about 268bhp and 335Nm. It claims a range of up to 631km, which means many intercity highway runs can be done without stopping to charge. The quicker option is the GLB 350 4MATIC. This one has 260 kW, which works out to around 349bhp and 515Nm. The sprint from 0 to 100 kmph takes a claimed 5.5 seconds, which is rather brisk for something that can also tow a caravan.

Fast charging is another highlight. Mercedes says a 10-minute charge can add up to 260km of range when plugged into a high-power 800-volt charger. AC charging capability goes up to 22 kW, depending on the specification.

Inside the cabin, the GLB is almost unrecognisable compared to its predecessor. A wide, connected display panel called the Superscreen dominates the dashboard. The system now uses a new operating platform with artificial intelligence voice functions and the interface feels closer to the brand’s flagship EVs. A panoramic roof is standard and there is an optional smart glass version that can switch transparency in milliseconds. It also features an illuminated star pattern for those who enjoy a light show.

Safety systems are comprehensive with features such as adaptive cruise control, lane guidance, accident pre-conditioning and a host of radar and camera-based functions designed to reduce driver workload.

Mercedes also plans a hybrid version with a petrol engine and 48-volt tech for markets where electric charging infrastructure is still developing.

The new GLB aims to bridge practicality with premium appeal, and early figures suggest Mercedes has sharpened the numbers where owners notice most. Longer range, more space and faster charging all point to a stronger position in the competitive luxury EV SUV space.
