Flat tracking has become a new craze in India, with brands like Royal Enfield launching events like the Slide School with its Guerrilla 450, so to capitalise on this newfound craze, Triumph India has launched the Tracker 400 at ₹2.46 lakh, ex-showroom. It is equipped with the new 349cc engine bespoke for the Indian market. It gets a flat tracker-style handlebar, new graphics, knobby tyres and a seat cowl for the rear bench seat. Can the tracker be the start of a new motorcycling segment in India?
It's a proper flat-tracker!
The Tracker 400 gets a new boxy design for the tank, along with Tracker stickering on the tank, and 400 stickering on the side panel. It gets a removable seat cowl, a bench-type seat, and a flyscreen for the headlight. The handlebar is a tracker-style flat handlebar with rear set footrests from the Thruxton 400, and it gets knobby tyres from MRF to complete the flat tracker aesthetic. It even gets the dual-barrel exhaust from the Scrambler 400x.
Gets a new drivetrain
The Tracker 400 is powered by a 349cc single-cylinder engine producing 39.5bhp at 8750 rpm and 32Nm of torque at 7500 rpm. The peak power is produced slightly higher in the rev range compared to the international spec Tracker 400, courtesy of a shorter stroke of the 349cc engine. The engine also has different valve timings, redesigned intake and an optimised balancer shaft. Triumph has also given it more aggressive fueling to keep the performance similar to the 398cc engine. The result of that is the Tracker 400 does 0 to 100 kmph in just 7.6 seconds!
Mechanically, it is the same as the international spec Tracker 400 with a 43mm USD fork up front and a monoshock at the rear. It gets dual-channel ABS and traction control, but the Indian units miss out on the engine immobiliser. The tracker has the smallest wheelbase out of all Triumph models at 1367mm, and this is achieved with a shorter rake for increased agility.
Pricing and rivals
The prices of the Tracker 400 start at ₹2.46 lakh, and it slots between the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400x in Triumph India's lineup. Its main competitors are the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 and the Harley Davidson X440T.
