Here’s something bright orange, shaped like a spaceship, and loud enough to scare your local WhatsApp group. It’s called the Mercedes-AMG GT XX, and it’s an all-electric concept with 1,340bhp, 1,400Nm, and a top speed of 359kmph. Yes, 359.
The GT XX previews AMG’s first standalone EV. Not a rebodied Merc. Not a recycled SLS Electric Drive. A full-fat, ground-up e-hypercar that’s being taken rather seriously.
It’s big too. At 5.2 metres long, it’s longer than some luxury flats in Mumbai. The body is split visually by electroluminescent rocker panels that light up depending on the charge level, because why not? It looks like a Taycan and a C111 had an argument, and someone spilt Fanta over it.
The Power Bit
It sits on AMG’s bespoke EV platform and gets three motors fed by an 800V system. Two motors out back, one up front, and a 4MATIC+ AWD system that basically means “enough grip to bend physics.” The rear motors are tucked into a 140kg housing with a planetary gearset and oil cooling. The front one, lighter at 80kg, only joins the party when absolutely necessary.
There’s a megawatt of power on tap, which converts neatly into 1,340bhp. AMG says it’ll go from 0–200kmph in five seconds, which is about as long as it takes to regret your last WhatsApp status update.
Charge Hard, Drive Hard
Here’s the clever part. Thanks to 850kW charging, Mercedes claims the GT XX can juice up 400km of range in 5 minutes. Right now, that’s faster than most people pay their electricity bills. Infrastructure doesn’t exist yet, but Mercedes and Alpitronic are working on chargers that can handle up to 1MW.
And it doesn’t even slow down at 80 per cent. It’ll keep charging rapidly right past it, which is big news for anyone who’s spent 45 minutes watching their EV inch from 78 to 100.
Wheels That Think
The 21-inch active aero wheels have five adjustable blades monitored by an actuator in the hub. They rotate to cool the brakes and generate electricity while they’re at it. No, they’re not production-ready. Yes, we wish they were.
Aerodynamics: Very Serious
The GT XX has a drag coefficient of 0.20. There’s an active front splitter, underfloor vanes, a pop-up rear airbrake, and a glowing rear light strip with 700 RGB LEDs that can show “content.” What kind of content? That’s anyone’s guess. Probably something about range anxiety.
Interior: Future Minimalism Meets Recycled Tyres
The inside is… peculiar. There’s no actual engine, but the design references one. There are bright orange highlights, a crackle-finish centre console, and 3D-printed seats made of Labfiber – a material made from old racing tyres and vegetables. You read that right.
No traditional steering wheel either. Just a cut-down Formula One-inspired yoke, connected to a steer-by-wire system. So, no mechanical linkage between you and the tyres. Comforting.
What Now?
This concept isn’t just fantasy. AMG says most of the tech underneath is locked in for production. Yes, some of the flashier bits will be toned down, but the powertrain, motors, charging speed and aerodynamics? All very real.
Whether or not it will arrive looking this orange remains to be seen. But one thing’s clear: AMG is done tiptoeing into the EV future. This is an all-out cannonball.
We’ll wait for the production version with crossed arms and slightly squinted eyes. Preferably behind sunglasses. Because of that orange paint? It’s not subtle.
