The G-Class just got a new member in India. Mercedes-Benz has launched the G 450d, the first diesel version of the iconic SUV in India, joining petrol and electric variants. The 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder diesel churns out 367bhp and 750Nm of torque. With a 48V mild-hybrid system adding 20bhp, the G 450d rockets from 0 to 100kmph in 5.8 seconds and hits a top speed of 210kmph.
The G-Class’s off-road pedigree remains untouched. It rides on a proven ladder-frame chassis, with three mechanical differential locks, high ground clearance of 241 mm, 31° approach and 30° departure angles, and fording depth of 70 cm. Side slopes up to 35° are no problem either. Add adaptive damping and long-travel suspension, and you have a true off-road workhorse that doubles as a luxury cruiser.
Inside, Mercedes-Benz has gone all out. The cabin features two-tone Nappa leather, Burmester 3D sound with Dolby Atmos, and a customizable ambient lighting system. The new off-road cockpit puts essential info—compass, altitude, steering angle, tyre pressure—right in the driver’s view. The MBUX NTG7 infotainment system now supports Augmented Reality navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and 12.3-inch dual displays.
For those who like things a bit more personal, the MANUFAKTUR programme allows near-limitless customisation, from upholstery and paint to decorative stitching and seat trims.
Mercedes-Benz India is also introducing the “G-Tribe Escapades,” an exclusive SUV drive experience for select buyers covering routes from India to Thimphu, Punakha and Paro. Only 50 units of the G 450d are available in this first allocation, priced from Rs. 2.90 crore ex-showroom.
On the road, the G 450d delivers the blend of power, luxury and refinement G-Class fans expect. DYNAMIC SELECT offers multiple driving modes, including off-road programmes for sand, rocks or mud. Despite its size, it feels planted and confident, whether climbing a hill or cruising city streets.
The G 450d proves that Mercedes-Benz can respect a legend while giving it a fresh edge. Diesel fans finally have their turn behind the wheel of the iconic G-Class, without compromising on performance or luxury.
