Mercedes-Benz GLC EV Teased with Futuristic 942-LED Grille

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz GLC EV has broken cover. Well, just a little bit. Ahead of its global debut at the Munich Motor Show on September 7, Mercedes has released a teaser that focuses entirely on… a grille. But not just any grille. This is a 942-LED pixel, animated, chrome-framed light show that Mercedes insists is a nod to its rich history, yet feels as futuristic as a spaceship landing in Andheri.

A Grille with 942 Reasons to Stare

Unlike the smooth, minimalist faces of the EQC and its electric siblings, the new GLC EV’s upright grille is loud and proud. Inspired by icons like the 1902 Mercedes Simplex and the stately 600 Pullman, this grille mixes old-school chrome bravado with 942 backlit LEDs capable of playing animations. Yes, your car’s front end will now have more graphics than a K-pop concert.

At the centre sits a giant illuminated three-pointed star. However, depending on local regulations, not all markets will receive the fully lit emblem. In Europe, for example, only the star is allowed to glow, whereas in other markets, the entire ring may be lit up. Buyers will have a choice of two finishes: Silver Shadow for the classicists and Dark Chrome Optic for those who like their bling a little stealthy. Prefer subtlety? Mercedes will also offer a non-illuminated version with smoky white plastic squares that politely whisper “EV” instead of shouting it.

Sleeker Lights, Subtle Edges

While Mercedes has kept most of the GLC EV’s exterior design hidden, the teaser hints at sharper, smoked-effect LED headlights flanking the grille. The bumper gets dark grey accents around the air intakes, giving the SUV a planted, confident stance without going full ‘Mad Max’.

New MBUX Hyperscreen – Sharper, Smarter, Smoother

Inside, the GLC EV will feature a new iteration of the MBUX Hyperscreen. This sweeping digital display integrates your instrument cluster, infotainment, and even air conditioning controls into one massive, curved glass panel. While the Hyperscreen is already seen in the EQS and EQE, the GLC EV’s version promises sharper graphics, silkier animations, and faster touch response. It’s a bit like upgrading from an old plasma TV to an 8K OLED – even if you’re just using it to change the cabin temperature.

The EQ Era Gets a New Badge

Interestingly, Mercedes is shifting away from standalone EQ branding. Starting with the GLC EV, future electric models will be positioned in the core lineup, carrying names that mirror their internal combustion counterparts. Think GLC with EQ Technology, not EQC 2.0. The idea is to create a more unified design and naming language across both EV and ICE models. So, don’t be surprised if you see petrol-powered Mercs adopting some of these EV design cues as well.

India Debut? Expect a 2026 Launch

While the global reveal is scheduled for September, the GLC EV is expected to arrive on Indian shores by late 2026. Prices? Given Mercedes-Benz India’s current EV positioning, it’s safe to expect a sticker price in the ballpark of Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom). Power figures are yet to be disclosed, but a ballpark estimate would be around 400 bhp and 700 Nm of torque, considering its position above the EQC.

The Takeaway

With its LED-drenched grille and a focus on harmonising the EV and ICE lineups, the new GLC EV isn’t just a facelifted EQC. It’s Mercedes-Benz’s statement of intent for the next phase of electric luxury. And if you thought grilles were going out of fashion in the EV era, Mercedes has just given you 942 reasons to reconsider.
