Land Rover Unveils Road-Legal D7X-R as the Defender Dakar

Meet the Defender Dakar, a road-legal version of the Dakar Rally-winning D7X-R competition car, which secured first, second and fourth places at the 2026 Dakar Rally. Land Rover has now brought the rally-bred D7X-R’s performance and hardware to the road with the limited-run Defender Dakar.

The Defender Dakar draws its exterior inspiration from the D7X-R and will be offered in three colour options, including the signature Dakar Sand with a Yanbu Turquoise roof inspired by the race-winning D7X-R livery. Narvik Black and Alaska White will also be available, with an optional Matte Protective Film.

On the inside, the Defender Dakar gets a rally-inspired 2+2 cabin with specially designed front race seats, while four-point racing harnesses will be available as an option. The rear storage area is designed to accommodate race helmets, while the loadspace features a dedicated mounting system for the spare wheel and air compressor.

Powering the Defender Dakar is the same BMW-derived 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, but unlike the competition car, it is no longer restricted by race regulations and produces a colossal 635hp and 750Nm of torque. The road-legal Defender Dakar also retains the rugged body architecture, transmission and driveline from the D7X-R competition car.

The Defender Dakar gets a 35-inch tyre package with Advanced All-Terrain Tyres mounted on new forged 20-inch wheels. It also features coil suspension with motorsport-proven Bilstein Advanced Dampers, along with new Dunes and Gravel drive modes and a Flight Mode, which was originally developed for the competition car to ensure smoother landings over extreme and varied terrain. Its rally-inspired exterior features roof-mounted light pods, a fixed metal roof, carbon-fibre raised air intakes and bonnet, extended wheel arches with exposed rivets, a tailgate blanking plate, signature mud flaps, enhanced metal front undershield and additional underbody protection.

Registrations of interest for the limited-run Defender Dakar are now open, with reservations set to begin in early 2027. Land Rover will reveal further technical details and specifications at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.
