Toyota has dominated the Le Mans competition, winning 5 straight races between 2018 and 2022. The manufacturer unveiled a brand-new hydrogen-powered concept before the start of the 24-hour race this year that was created "with future competition in its sights."
The Toyota GR H2 Racing Concept has a single-seater cockpit designed in the shape of a capsule with high-tech aerodynamic elements including an F1-like roof duct, a vertical fin, and a sizable rear wing. The 2022 Toyota GR GT3 Concept's aggressive visage is evocative of this design, which also has more LEDs, wide air channels, and holes in the front fenders that reveal some of the slick tyres.
The next racer is 2,050 mm (80.7 inches) broad and 5,100 mm (200.8 inches) long. With comparable dimensions but a totally new bodywork, it is 200 mm (7.9 inches) longer and 50 mm (2 inches) wider than the present GR010 Hybrid.
In terms of the powertrain's specifics, Toyota only said that it combines a hybrid system with a hydrogen engine. It should be noted that the GR Corolla racecar, which has been running in the Super Taikyu Series since 2021, is equipped with a hydrogen-fueled version of the 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine, however this one doesn't receive electrical assistance.
In addition to the conventional fuel-cell electric vehicles, racecars with hydrogen engines will be allowed to participate in the H2 category, according to a recent announcement by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), the organization behind the Le Mans 24 Hours. With this, Toyota is able to advance the technology that, in the future, may be used to manufacture of cars.
