Ranking highest in our list, surprisingly, are two SUVs. The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder are the same cars with a different badge and slight design changes. These mid-size SUVs have taken the segment by storm, with the Grand Vitara beating Creta for the top spot in sales for some months. These SUVs come equipped with intelligent electric hybrid tech and petrol engines. This tech helps them achieve a mindblowing mileage of 27.97 km/l. Maruti Suzuki claims it can drive a whopping 1200 kms in a full tank. Adding to that the decent power output of 91 hp and 122 Nm of torque, they seem like a great pick. They also offer better space, road presence, and features than other hatchbacks. The intelligent Hybrid variants of the Grand Vitara start at 18.43 Lakhs. Honda City e: HEV

Coming to the only sedan on the list, we have the Honda City e: HEV. The Honda City is a name tag that needs no introduction. It has been a heartthrob of Indian users for 25 years and is still one of the best sedans in its segment. The Honda City e: HEV is the hybrid version of the City that adds strong hybrid tech to its engine. Combined, the engine and hybrid tech lead to a fantastic mileage of 26.5 Km/l.

Regarding performance figures, the system combined churns out a power output of 124 hp and 127 Nm of torque. With this, you get the comfort associated with sedans, a big boot, and all the high-tech features you expect from a car in its segment. Maruti Suzuki Celerio

We enter the Hatchback territory with a car that has recently faded away in importance. The Celerio sometimes gets lost in the crowd of the Altos, the WagonRs, and the Kwids. That being said, the Celerio in itself is an excellent package. It is a compact car with respectable performance, incredible mileage, good features and a fair price tag. Where it outdoes all of its competitors is in mileage numbers. Maruti Suzuki claims you can get a fuel economy of 25.24 Km/l with the manual and 26.68 Km/l with the Automatic version of the Celerio. This is not only the highest among sedans but also the highest when it comes to non-hybrid cars.

It also offers features like a 7-inch touchscreen display and an engine start-stop button. In terms of performance, the Celerio is powered by a 1.0L K10C engine that produces 66 hp and 89 Nm torque. The prices of the Celerio start at 5.36 Lakhs for the Manual and 6.33 Lakhs for the AMT transmission. 

Maruti Suzuki Swift 

Swift has ranked high in the sales charts of Indian cars for a long time now. It offers a premium sedan experience with fun driving dynamics and impressive fuel economy. It got a facelift in 2024, further increasing its fuel efficiency numbers. The latest number stands at 24.8 km/l for the Manual transmission and 25.75 Km/l for the AMT version. The engine behind this excellent mileage is the 1.2L Z-series Petrol engine that is capable of producing 80 hp and 111.7 Nm of torque. This is a 3-cylinder engine instead of the 4-cylinder one earlier and also makes 9 hp less than before. However, the safety quotient has improved with 6 airbags and features like hill-hold assist, ESP, ABS and EBD. Maruti Suzuki WagonR

The next Entrant in our list is a car you undoubtedly saw when you were last on the road, the WagonR. This tallboy hatchback has hacked into sales in every generation it had. It represents almost everything a person in that price range wants: a spacious car with decent looks, stable performance, ultimate reliability and, most importantly, sane mileage. What exactly are these mileage numbers? If you get a petrol manual, it is 24.35 Km/l, and for an automatic, it goes up to 25.19 km/l. Do you know a fun fact about it? Its K12N engine is 9 hp more powerful than the Swift! Yes, strange, but true. It produces 89 hp and 113 Nm of torque. The WagonR stands out from the competition because of its features, low price, and comfortable ride. You can get one for yourself at a starting price of 5.54 Lakhs for the Manual and 6.49 Lakhs for the automatic.
